I wrote the Bra-makers Manual (available here) and it was finally published. I just made my self-imposed deadline to have the book published in 2005 - it came back from the printers on December 30th! Nothing like a deadline to keep me up late at night. December 30th was my birthday, too, so it was the best birthday present ever!
I am totally grateful for the sewing community who have purchased the book , read it and posted some great reviews. I am both encouraged by the number of women (men, too) who really, really want to make great bras, and humbled by the faith you have in me and my work.
Here are some of the reviews that have been sent in for the book.
From Sew 'n' Go at Pattern Review
"After reading the book from cover to cover, I feel that my first review was too tepid and didn't include enough information. I tried editing the original, but couldn't make it stick. Hence Part 2. The Bra-Makers Manual thoroughly covers how to get and develop a basic bra pattern - via commerical pattern (eg - Kwik Sew), pattern software (eg - Wild Ginger), cloning a good fitting RTW bra without cutting it up, and developing a bra pattern from a dress sloper. Then book reviews how to improve your basic bra pattern so it works better. It discusses how to change the basic bra pattern to turn out different styles such as demi-cup bras, strapless bras, nursing bras, running bras, mastectomy bras, bustiers and other styles. As well the book discusses style changes to backs, bridges (part between the cups at CF), straps, and closings (front and back). It discusses fitting issues - how to improve the look and support of cups, how to increase or decrease cups, how to make a back-band that fits, etc.As well, The Bra-makers manual gives you detailed instructions for sewing the different styles and has an excellent section on suitable fabrics. It's a really great book and will help sewists interested in producing great looking and fitting bras" Victoria
Of course I love this one! Comment on a corset making group thread....
"Since the beginning of time, I have been searching for a really good book on bra making. and I finally found it!!! I just got it an hour ago, so I haven't really digested it, but I couldn't wait to share this treasure with all of you. Within the first few minutes of reading, I actually learned something, and not just 'something". I learned exactly what I have been looking all over for, how to draft and grade your own bra patterns without using a ready made bra as a pattern. I knew how to draft from a sloper, how to alter a commercial pattern, how to use a ready made bra as a pattern, and how to modify all of them (to some extent), but I didn't know how to grade that basic pattern to make any size and style. The book does show how to do all of the above and more. Way more.Anyone interested in making bras will get something out of this book. The illustrations are very clear and very nicely rendered. the text is very easy to understand and well organized. Form what I can tell so far, the author really knows what she is talking about and is very good at communicating. The book is $75 USD plus shipping. You can buy it from the Bra Maker's Supply web site. They have a detailed description of the contents there. It is expensive, but worth every penny. I am in love with this book. Oh, and believe me, I am a harsh critic! I have just been so disgusted with all the other books I have found that supposedly teach bra pattern drafting and construction.I can't wait to try out the methods with my next bra! I have to make a purple satin corset bra to go with an underbust corset for one of my favorite clients. Just when I was about to give up making custom bras (or invest a huge sum in pattern drafting software that may or may not be sufficient), this amazing book just dropped out of the clouds onto my lap. You can order it on ebay too, by the way. I feel almost giddy...."
Now isn't that a wonderful testimonial!
